Named for its black tannic waters, the Black River has long been a favorite of paddlers in the Lowcountry and beyond. The river flows through bottomland forest along most of its length and offers excellent birding and wildlife watching opportunities. This free-flowing Coastal Plains river has been has the designation of being a State Scenic River, giving you the opportunity to paddle down a pristine river corridor of towering bald cypress trees, black willow and pine. Supporting a myriad of wildlife including turkeys, hawks, wood ducks, night herons and swallow-tailed kites, this is a protected haven for resident and migratory fauna.
This river is a guide favorite. Throughout the year, they get to take groups of students kayaking here for the South Carolina Outdoor Education Program and it gives them the chance to know this river intimately.
If you are looking for a kayak expedition that takes you places that you wouldn’t be able to see otherwise, this is the trip to take. We’ll gently paddle down water trails that will maximize your wildlife opportunities, and the quiet rhythm of the kayaking will allow us to really get in sync with the natural world.
This tour may be booked for private trips.
