Dominick House FAQs

A few things to know before your trip

Why are deposits non-refundable?
The demand is very high for this trip and it is difficult to re-book spots once we are close to the trip date.

Do you cancel for rain or bad weather?
We will cancel and give 100% refunds if the weather is dangerous (hurricanes, tropical storm, etc.). Otherwise, check the forecast and pack the gear you need for hiking in the rain, cold, wind or sun.

Can I arrive late or leave the island early?
If there is an emergency, yes.  But otherwise you need to plan to be on the island for the entirety of the trip.
Trip leaders will not make special boat trips to and from the island to accommodate personal schedules.

When does the trip begin?  When does the boat return?
On Friday, you’ll meet at Garris Landing (498 Bulls Island Road) at 10 a.m. for a quick orientation before you depart for the island. On Sunday, you’ll be back to the mainland by 2 p.m.

Is this a good trip for birders?
Excellent.

Will I have my own room and bathroom?
The Dominick House is very comfortable, but it is not a hotel. You may have a shared bathroom, and non-couple travelers may have to share a room with other solo travelers of the same gender. This has not been a problem in the 7 years that we have been running this trip, and we have guests that return year after year.

Is there heat and air conditioning?
Yep. It’s fully equipped with HVAC, hot water, full kitchen, living area and everything you would expect for a comfortable weekend adventure.

Is there WIFI or cell phone service?
Most cell phones work well on the island (Verizon is particularly reliable), but there is no WIFI to hook into at the house.

What do you do about food allergies?
Prior to your trip, we’ll reach out to you about food allergies/limitations and we will make arrangements to accommodate them.

We ask that you are as flexible as possible with your diet for this trip, keeping in mind that we cook for the group and all food is brought to the island for this trip.  For example, if you don’t eat pork or are allergic to shrimp, let us know!  But don’t choose this as your weekend to give up dairy or go on on a cleanse– this is a biscuits and homemade dessert-laden meal plan.

May I bring alcohol?
Yes, but use good judgement.

Is there coffee?
Plenty, and the first pot gets brewed at 5 a.m.

Are the daily excursions optional?
Yes- if you don’t want to participate in something, you are welcome to stay back at the house and relax.

What should I pack and wear?
We’ll send a packing sheet and additional information after you book.  But basically, you’ll need clothes and toiletries, a small backpack and water bottle.  Dress for the weather as if you’re going hiking (long sleeves, long pants, walking/hiking shoes, hat).

Do many solo travelers do this trip?
Yes.

Should I do this trip?
Yes.  100% yes.  The guides that lead the trip are world-class, the food is excellent and the island is almost never open to overnight visitors.  Read this article about how good it is and then book!

Explore. Chat. Visit. And come on back, y’all.
