CEXy Guide: Sophie Kruetz

How long have you been a Coastal Expeditions guide?  Since February 2021
Where are you originally from? Chicago, IL
What is your favorite CEXy trip or program and why? : The Awendaw Creek Paddle and Hike. I love being able to paddle in the salt marsh estuary as well as hike the end of the grand Palmetto Trail, a path that takes you through multiple ecotones, unveils great history, and offers some of the best animal/plant spotting sights of all time!
What makes you well suited to be a Coastal Expeditions naturalist? I majored in marine biology, chemistry and art and I have over 6 years of teaching experience. I have also created interdisciplinary curriculum for all ages that focuses on the melding of art, science and the surrounding natural environment.
What’s your favorite indigenous animal or plant species and why?  The Spinybacked Orbweaver (spider). This is an awesome animal with an incredible patterning and spooky back structure. It is non venomous, but looks like Hannibal Lecter’s mask in the Silence of the Lambs (people rarely get that reference).
Do you have an area of expertise or interests that we should know about?  My areas of expertise and interest are illustration/painting, marine fish/corals and movie references.
Are there any tours or programs that you feel are your specialty? I like all programs and consider myself a renaissance woman, but specifically I love any Paddle+Hike as well as the Kiawah River.
Anything else that we should know about you? : I love Broadway and will probably sing on my tour… fair warning.
