Paddle and Hike | Awendaw Creek Book Now

Upcoming Dates:
Sunday, April 28

Nestled between the 66,306 acres of Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge and the 252,368 acres of Francis Marion National Forest is Awendaw Creek.  This is literally where the land and ocean meet, creating a dynamic edge where the live oak and palmetto landscape ends and the saltmarsh begins.  Wildlife like black skimmers, kingfishers, oystercatchers (and oysters!), fiddler crabs and dolphins make their home in and around this protected water trail.

After a 4-mile paddle (timed with the tides to help us along),  we’ll hike the end portion of the Palmetto Trail known as the Awendaw Passage.  The hike takes you through a diverse ecosystem supported by the over-story of live oaks, pines and palmettos.  Unique to the area, this trail is situated on a bluff that is about 20-feet above Awendaw Creek, giving you the chance to see far across the salt marsh.  Along the way, we’ll identify the flora and fauna of this coastal habitat and talk about the history of this region.

Reasons to sign up for this tour:

1. It has elevation.  The bluffs that line the creek are up to 20-feet high, giving you a perspective that you don’t ever get in the Lowcountry.  It makes for an interesting paddle and for great overlooks on the hike.
2. You can stop in at the Sewee Outpost (we’re obsessed) before you come and get good snacks.
3. You’ll cover nearly 9 miles of water and terrain, but you’ll enjoy the trek.  Bring good shoes.  We’ll bring the equipment and know-how needed to make it enjoyable.
4. This is a great alternative to the Bulls Island Paddle+Hike if you want something that is less intensive.
