As of November 1, 2019, the Folly Outpost is permanently closed.
Over 15 years ago, Chris scouted the area to open Coastal Expeditions’ first outpost and found the perfect spot at Crosby’s Seafood on the way to Folly Island. Over the years, our guides have taken thousands of people kayaking and paddleboarding in this maze of tidal creeks. Our incredible team, with manager Dallas Baker at the helm, poured their hearts and souls into this beautiful spot.
It’s also been a great place for us to to practice local philanthropy. Over the years, we’ve collected nearly SIX TONS of pet food for local shelters at our annual Folly Doggy Paddle and hosted fundraising days and trips for Morris Island Save the Light, South Carolina Aquarium and The Center for Birds of Prey. BIG THANKS to everyone who has shown up to support these events!
It’s been an unforgettable adventure, and we’ve made friendships that will last a lifetime.
We’ve packed up our paddles and relocated to a wilder spot just a short drive away on the banks of the Kiawah River. It’s a place where roseate spoonbills nearly overwinter, collecting in flocks of up to 40 birds. It’s where dolphins strand-feed, unfettered by the boat traffic that interrupts them in more discovered areas. It’s a place where we can get out and explore by kayak, paddleboard, boat or land.

In addition, it gets us to the places that we need to be, like Captain Sam’s Spit and Bird Key Stono. These are places that we want to take you because we want you to love and protect them. Through island sweeps, kayak tours, birding trips and other excursions, you’ll see how important these wildlife areas are to our birds, dolphins, horseshoe crabs and other species.
We’ll just be a few miles away from our first outpost home on Folly. We hope you’ll come out to see us and trust that we’ve got something special to show you at our Kiawah River Outpost.
And, of course, you can always come and see us at our other Charleston outposts on Shem Creek, Isle of Palms and Bulls Island!
