The Whimbrels have just arrived in the Lowcountry, tired and hungry from their migration from South America. They’ve stopped over to feast on the bounty of our barrier islands, and up to 20,000 will congregate on the spit of sand known as Deveaux Bank.
Coastal Expeditions is leading a limited number of tours to Deveaux Bank this spring to see the migrating Whimbrels as they stopover to rest and feed. With guidance from South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, our boats will keep a respectful distance from the shore to prevent any disturbance. Staying offshore, we’ll get an incredible look at this natural spectacle, with Coastal Expeditions guides offering naturalist interpretation along the way.

Participants will be on the boat for the duration of the trip. It is suitable for most activity levels.
WHAT TO WEAR
Dress for the weather. A windbreaker jacket is often a good idea for the boat ride.

Binoculars, camera, drinking water
WEATHER
Weather (thunderstorms or high winds) may impact this excursion. Cancellations usually occur due to lightning, thunder or high winds and we will make sure to reschedule your group if needed. Our general cancellation policies apply unless our experts determine it is potentially unsafe or unwise to venture out. In the event that we decide to cancel due to weather, we will make every effort to call you at least two hours before your departure and help you reschedule or credit/refund the full cost of your trip.
GRATUITY
Gratuity is not included in your tour price. Our guides go above and beyond to make sure you have a fantastic time out on the water! Average gratuity ranges from 15%–25% of your tour cost based on your experience. It is not required, but always greatly appreciated!

You’ll need to cancel 1 week prior or you will not be eligible for a refund for the tour.
Protecting and conserving seabird rookery islands has become a cornerstone of the Coastal Expeditions Foundation. Through ecotours to places like Crab Bank, Deveaux Bank and Bird Key Stono, we are able to educate about these critical nesting grounds.
