Education and exploration go hand in hand in shaping young minds. At Coastal Expeditions, we believe that access to nature and quality learning experiences should be within reach for every student, regardless of their socioeconomic background.
This year, we leveraged our end-of-season sale to support local students from area schools. For every kayak or paddleboard sold, we scholarshipped a student on a field trip through the Coastal Expeditions Foundation. By the end of the day, we doubled our goal and will take two classrooms- 50 students- on immersive field trips to places like St. Phillips Island and Crab Bank.
The initiative demonstrates our commitment to environmental education and highlights the importance of access and inclusivity in outdoor experiences. Title I schools, which serve a high percentage of students from low-income families, often face challenges in providing students with opportunities for hands-on learning experiences beyond the classroom. Coastal Expeditions recognizes this disparity and is looking for proactive steps to bridge the gap.
The field trips to St. Phillips Island and Crab Bank, renowned for their biodiversity and ecological significance, offers students an unparalleled chance to engage with nature. St. Phillips Island, a barrier island known for its pristine beaches and diverse wildlife, provides a rich learning ground for exploring coastal ecosystems, while Crab Bank, a critical bird sanctuary, offers insights into avian conservation efforts.
Through Coastal Expeditions field trips, students will have the chance to witness firsthand the delicate balance of nature and the importance of environmental conservation. They will be guided by knowledgeable naturalists from Coastal Expeditions, who share their expertise, sparking curiosity and fostering a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of ecosystems.
The impact of this initiative extends far beyond just a day trip. For many of these students, it will be a transformative experience—one that might ignite a lifelong passion for environmental stewardship or inspire future careers in conservation.
If you would like to support a student on a field trip, you can make a tax-deductible donation to the Coastal Expeditions Foundation. A $35 donation will provide a scholarship to a Title I student from a local school to visit Bulls Island, St. Phillips Island or Crab Bank Seabird Sanctuary.
