Cape Romain is closed from dusk to dawn, and no camping is allowed on refuge islands. This means that very few people get the opportunity to witness the sunrise on the Boneyard Beach of Bulls Island. Having seen it ourselves, we know that this is a rare and special moment, standing on a pristine shoreline within a National Wildlife Refuge.
We’ve timed this tour with a low tide during sunrise so that you have all of Boneyard Beach to photograph as the sun peaks over the horizon. This tour often books out early, so make your reservation as soon as you find the date that suits your schedule!
This is Chris Crolley‘s favorite trip to lead, even when it’s cold and windy. And we’ve noticed that once someone finally decides they’re going to do this trip, they come again (and again!). It’s not just for photographers, y’all. It’s for nature lovers, birders, beach combers and seekers, too.
A limited number of private charters are available. Contact us for more information.
ACTIVITY LEVEL
You’ll take a boat ride to the island, followed by truck transportation to and from the beach. Once you are at the beach, you will walk about 1/4 mile to the boneyard (Road erosion over the last 2 years prevents us from going directly to the Boneyard).

Sunrise, Adventurous, Birding
"If you're looking for breathtaking views of South Carolina, this tour is for you! The ferry ride allows ample time for taking in crystal clear views of the night sky - the Milky Way was showing off on this morning. After docking, there is a short trailer ride to the boneyard beach. The predawn light is still faint, giving you the chance to set up for photos. The clear coastline offers uninterrupted scenery as the sunrise stretches across the sky. After taking a short walk down the beach for shelling, you are welcome to depart or stay on for more exploring. The trip back winds through Sewee Bay, where you will catch glimpses of local wildlife, including American oystercatchers. Excellent experience with knowledgeable guides - will definitely be going back!"
