Y’all know that we love the chance to offer tours that are extra special–and this is one of them.  Although we’ve talked about it for years, we’ve never offered a paddle+hike from Hampton Plantation.  Now, with a one-time collaboration with The Longleaf Alliance, we’ve come up with an itinerary that gives us a chance to delve into the story of longleaf and its impact on native species like red-cockaded woodpeckers, gopher tortoises, wild turkeys and orchids.  Longleaf pine forests can have up to 40 plant species per square meter, making them one of the most botanically diverse ecosystems on the planet!

The Itinerary: Meet at Hampton Plantation by 8:30am to check in and get acquainted with the group and guides.  From there, we’ll hike through Hampton Plantation and Francis Marion National Forest  for 2-3 miles.  Wildlife Biologist Lisa Lord of The Longleaf Alliance will lead this portion of the trip, talking about the unique ecology of longleaf pine forests and the importance of their conservation.

After a break for a picnic lunch, Coastal Expeditions guides will lead a paddle from Hampton Creek to Wambaw Creek and back.  While the longleaf pine holds dominion over the high ground, it’s a mix of tupelo and cypress that takes over the lowland habitat.  As we paddle into this protected area known as the Wambaw Wilderness, expect to see river otters, American alligators, yellow-bellied sliders and birds like owls, herons and migratory raptors.

The Longleaf Alliance works throughout the Southeast U.S. to guide longleaf restoration, stewardship, and conservation using science-based outreach, partnership engagement, and on-the-ground assistance.
