On Saturday, May 18th, join Kiawah River & Coastal Expeditions on an extraordinary paddle + hike tour from the forest to the sea.

The adventure begins with a naturalist-led hike through the maritime forest of a spectacular Lowcountry oasis at Kiawah River, an island village in the Charleston countrysideWe will explore a curated 5-mile section of the Kiawah River trail system on this 2000-acre wonderland in search of eagles, alligators, wild turkeys, painted buntings and more.

Of the 297 different species of birds categorized seasonally in our part of the world only one of them is pink.  This rare and unusual specimen known as the roseate spoonbill is our object bird as we move through the botanically diverse landscape on our way to the saltmarsh estuary.

Our expedition will trek in the footsteps of British colonist and explorer of this terrain, the Native American translator and frontiersman, Dr. Henry Woodward.  The same avian species and botanical contributors new to western Europe in the mid-17th century continue to be part of our experience today as we rediscover the diverse and varied natural habitats that lead us to Bobcat Landing at Kiawah River.

After a pause to refresh and prepare for the next phase of our adventure we will leave the mainland behind and venture into the intimate creeks via expedition-style sea kayaks.  As we cross this dynamic edge that is the transition between the land and the sea we will experience a dramatic change of both flora and fauna.  The alligators, white-tailed deer and wild turkeys of the forest will give way to the bottle-nosed dolphins, egrets and pelicans of the estuary.  The ecosystem changes dramatically as the oaks and pines yield to the smooth cordgrass fields of the saltmarsh.

The return trip to our home base at the Farmhouse will be accented by the crepuscular light of the setting sun and the orange glow of the full moon, known to Native Americans as the Full Flower Moon. (This should be epic.)

Upon returning it would only be fitting to take some time for fellowship at the comfortable and welcoming amenities of the Farmhouse.  It’s the perfect venue for us to reflect on the day’s adventure and inevitably begin to plan for the next one… May we suggest one of the most productive bird nesting islands on the east coast of North America?
