Kiawah River: Baby Birds & Brilliant Beach Book Now

On Saturday, June 22, join Kiawah River & Coastal Expeditions on an exclusive birding ecotour and beach exploration.

The adventure begins under the shaded canopy of grand oaks at the Farmhouse at Kiawah River, an island village in the Charleston countrysideAfter meeting and greeting, we will proceed to Bobcat Landing-the on-property portal to all things wild and salty- to board Coastal Expeditions’ Godwit, a 30-foot USCG boat.  With full shade cover and room for up to 35 people (we’re capping this trip at 25), this is the perfect boat for summer birding. Our start finds us on the intimate creeks behind Kiawah Island that wind through to the Atlantic Ocean.

The salt marsh estuary is one of the most super bio-diversified ecosystems on Earth.  On our adventure, we’ll explore the salt marsh creeks and ocean tributaries as we identify a myriad of different avian species, searching along the way for pods of gregarious bottlenose dolphins. (Although dolphins are not guaranteed, we do see them almost every time we’re in this part of the Lowcountry.)

We will continue down the Kiawah River (perhaps led by a team of dolphins) as it feeds into the Stono River en route to Bird Key.  Bird Key Stono is one of only four seabird and shorebird nesting sanctuaries on the South Carolina coast.  The parent birds have been busy pair bonding, nest building and  preparing for the summer fledglings that are arriving daily at this point.  Our trusty vessel Godwit works as a fantastic bird blind and offers an unobtrusive vantage point to witness these avian masters of air and water as they go about the daily tasks of feeding, sheltering and teaching their newly hatched young the tricks of the trade.

After exploring the estuaries, creeks, rivers and rookery at Bird Key we will land on the wild beach on the north end of Kiawah Island. This will be an excellent opportunity to stretch our legs, scout about for sand dollars and sea shells as well as find a little privacy beyond the primary dunes.  Accessible only by boat, this isolated stretch of sand at the north end of Kiawah Island is a wild paradise.  It’s the perfect spot to lay out your picnic (with a beer or glass of wine provided by Kiawah River) and relaxed conversation before heading back.

We will return to Kiawah River just before the heat of the day, ready to plan our next adventure…

Kiawah River x Coastal Expeditions.  Live your best life.
