The Outdoor School at Coastal Expeditions is ready for some fun at Explorers Day Camp!
Come explore with us out in nature! Our educators will choose the activities that day based on what the weather and tide are doing! Note: Low tide days make for great shark tooth hunts. Each day is different, taking campers ages 5 to 11 to different destinations from our Shem Creek campus.
This is open for ages 5-11. We will split the groups up by age when they arrive so the younger kids are together and the older kids are together.
Sign up for one– or take advantage of multiple days!
Explorers Itinerary
We will be heading out to a barrier island where students will have the opportunity to fossil hunt, swim, kayak, fort build, and look for critters in the marsh.
Options include but are not limited to:
Kayaking Adventure
Campers will learn the basics of sea kayaking with a Coastal Expeditions guide before paddling to Crab Bank Seabird Rookery.
Critter Collection & Scavenger Hunt
Campers will participate in a scavenger hunt along the Shem Creek boardwalk. Campers will learn about the estuary and have time to search for wildlife! In the afternoon the group will participate in dip-netting and cast-netting off the dock finding critters and learning all about them!
Paddle Boarding and Outdoor Crafts
Campers will learn the basics of paddle boarding with a Coastal Expeditions guide before paddling on Shem Creek. On the paddle the group will be on the lookout for wildlife, seeing dolphins, birds, and much more along the way. In the afternoon the group will work on various crafts like painting birdhouses and planting seeds!
Morris Island Fossil Hunt
Campers will take the school boat, Bird, to Morris Island in Charleston Harbor for a day of fossil hunting, birding, and dolphin-spotting.
Drum Island Shelter Building and Fossil Hunt
Campers will take the school boat, Bird, to Drum Island in Charleston Harbor for a day of fossil hunting, birding, and dolphin-spotting. On Drum Island, students will also participate in a shelter-building contest.
Camp is led by Coastal Expeditions guides. They are year-round environmental educators with certifications in first aid, CPR, life guarding and sea kayaking. Safety is paramount and all campers wear PFD’s when on the dock, swimming and paddling.
