In the early 20th century, southern sea islands and former plantations become popular hunting properties for wealthy northerners like Carnegie and Rockefeller.  New York Senator Gayer Dominick bought Bulls Island, and over the years transformed this barrier island into a winter destination for he and his friends to hunt waterfowl on the freshwater impoundments that he had built.

To accommodate the hunting party, a large house was built at the center of the island, now known as the Dominick House.

In 1936, the house and island were conveyed to the United States Government and until the 1960’s was open to the public as a bed & breakfast for fishermen and naturalists to enjoy Bulls Island.

Now, eight times a year, Coastal Expeditions offers an all-inclusive,  3-day/2-night trip for an in-depth look at the varied habitats within Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge.   Expert guide service leads you through the weekend, taking you to the best birding spots, tracking bobcats and deer, exploring the Boneyard Beach at sunrise, hiking alongside alligator-laden ponds and sharing the history of the island back to the Native Americans.

Meals are prepared by a Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge volunteer known as Papa Mo, who delivers on a hearty menu of coastal-inspired meals that include trailside picnics, big southern breakfasts, steamed oysters and fresh, local shrimp.

Trip Advisor Reviews

Just outstanding! Our guide/naturalist, Gates was so knowledgeable but he did not make you feel like you were in a lecture, but rather he was sharing his knowledge and excitement. He was assisted by an enthusiastic guide Katie who has a smile that lights up the dawn. The island is so interesting on so many levels and we explored a lot of it. And Papa Mo made sure we were the best fed group anywhere. I don't often write a review, but this experience was so extraordinary that I felt I should.
