Island Quest

Ferry Ecotour & Island Walkabout on Bulls Island

The Bulls Island field study program takes place in the 65,000-acre Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. The Cape Romain Refuge is the heart of the longest stretch of protected coastline on the east coast of the United States. Cape Romain Refuge boast 29.000 acres of Class 1 wilderness area which yields an environment that is totally unaffected by the hands of man and the purist air and water available on the planet.

These pristine areas are habitats to creatures such as the Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin, Loggerhead sea turtle, Eastern brown pelican, American bald eagle, and the American alligator, as well as, a myriad of other plant and animal species.

The practical application of our adventure begins with the exploration of the estuary as the nursery school of Mother Nature in route to the only forested island in the refuge, Bulls Island. Once you arrive on the Island, you will hike the interior trails moving through the maritime forest and freshwater ecosystem. You will end up on the beach to look for and learn about the variety of shells and marine organisms.

Our field study will include a comprehensive overview of the history, geology, biology, and botany as it applies to the estuary, maritime forest and beach. This trip is adjusted to cover the science curriculum standard based with the idea that we will be introducing vocabulary and concepts that students will see again on standardized testing. This program is aimed at setting students up for success.
