Wild Wednesdays

Our guides are ready to explore beyond the salt marsh and are heading inland in October. We’ve put together 4 trips where we’re ready to dip our paddles- ACE Basin, Black River, Sparkleberry Swamp and Congaree.  We usually only do these trip by special request for private tours, so if you’ve ever wanted to get into these wild places, now is your chance.

October 2:  ACE Basin Kayak Tour.  One of the “world’s last great places,” the ACE Basin is a testament to cooperative conservation. This extensive watershed extends from swamps and blackwater down to the Atlantic, and includes the Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto Rivers. We’re going to kayak on the Edisto and a nearby creek- Penny Creek- to check out fall wildflowers, fall bird migration and the extensive plantation history. Old rice fields, slowly turning back to marsh over time, are incredible habitat for native flora and fauna of the Lowcountry.   $95/person.  |  BOOK NOW

October 16:  Black River Kayak Tour.  Named for its black tannic waters, the Black River in Andrews, SC has long been a favorite of paddlers in the Lowcountry and beyond. The river flows through bottomland forest along most of its length and offers excellent birding and wildlife watching opportunities- and with fall migration at its peak expect to see raptors like osprey and bald eagle in the open river corridor.   This free-flowing Coastal Plains river is designated a State Scenic River.  $95/person. |  BOOK NOW

October 23: Sparkleberry Swamp Canoe Tour.  We’ll be honest with you about this trip: We don’t offer this trip because we save it for ourselves.  It’s where the guides go when they want to get away for the weekend to escape to a place that is truly wild.  Sparkleberry is one of those magical places where the fog lingers in the morning, the cypress trees are too plentiful to count and the wildlife thrives. This is the first time we have offered this trip in nearly 10 years, so sign up today.  $95/person. |  Booking Available Soon

Coming Soon: Congaree Swamp Boat Tour.  This is another place that we’ve been hesitant to share.  It’s hard to get to the best parts– and because people have a hard time accessing this habitat, champion trees live here, wildlife prospers and it is designated a National Natural Landmark by the United States National Parks Service.   There are only 6 National Natural Landmarks in South Carolina, and they only reach that designation by containing outstanding biological and geological resources.  Garden & Gun published an excellent profile a few years ago- check it out here.  $65/person.

The Black River is one of South Carolina’s great paddle trails with critical habitat along its banks for migratory birds like swallow-tailed kites.

Explore. Chat. Visit. And come on back, y’all.
