Shelling on Bulls Island

Less is more, y'all.

Heading out to Bulls Island on the regular ferry or a beach drop? Shelling on this island within Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge is allowed, but there are some restrictions.  Here’s what you need to know before you start collecting:

1. Only a small bag of shells can be collected per person.  This equals about two handfuls of shells.  Consider what you could fit into a gallon Ziplock bag for reference.  Read are the refuge rules and regulations here.

If you have an excessive amount of shells, you will not be able to re-board the Bulls Island Ferry until you’ve edited your haul.

2. Always check to make sure they are empty. It is illegal to remove living shells from the beach. No matter how beautiful or LARGE the shell is, if it is living or has an animal using it for shelter you must leave it.

3. It is illegal to remove plants, driftwood, artifacts (bricks, pottery shards, etc.), bones or feathers from Bulls Island.

If it is alive or has an animal using it for shelter (like a hermit crab), you have to leave it where you found it. Only empty shells can be removed from Bulls Island.

Explore. Chat. Visit. And come on back, y’all.
