IT’S TIME TO SHOW UP FOR TURTLES
Our national wildlife refuge, a 62,000 acre wilderness just north of Charleston in Cape Romain, is the most significant nesting site for loggerhead sea turtles north of Florida.  Every summer, nearly 2,000 loggerhead nests are recorded on the protected beaches of these barrier islands.

It takes a dedicated corps of volunteers, a paid wildlife biologist and a paid trapper to ensure that these nests hatch.   Throughout the summer months, they head out to these islands by boat and battle heat and tides to categorize each nest, move them to higher ground and cage them.  Then, they monitor them daily to determine when they hatch and record their success.  To do this, it will take about $30,000.  And that is $30,000 that is not in the budget for 2019.

The Coastal Expeditions Foundation is working to raise the necessary funds before the nesting season begins. Ticket sales from the Bird Jam for Turtles will be used to make sure that this project continues.

“This is a great opportunity for the Charleston community to come together for their wild places, “Chris Crolley, owner of outdoor outfitter Coastal Expeditions, said.  “We hope everyone will come out to the Bird Jam, enjoy a beautiful afternoon in Awendaw and help us raise the money that is needed in Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge to protect nesting sea turtles.”
