Every week, our educators will choose a different adventure, depending on the tides and weather. All are designed to spark the imagination and develop a love for our local ecosystem. These 1.5 hour programs include a boat tour aboard our “Magic School Bus,” a custom-built Coast Guard-certified vessel named Gannet. Built in 2020, this fully-covered boat offers safe transport on these adventures are have a master captain at the helm.
A Coastal Expeditions naturalist leads the group through each program, with safety as the top priority. Life jackets are required on the boat.

Shark Tooth Adventure
On this expedition, we will take a boat trip out to a barrier island, either Morris Island or Crab Bank. At the island, we will have time to explore the island looking for shark teeth, fossils, and shells along the way!
Throughout the excursion, kids will be with an outdoor educator to identify fossils other beach finds and talk about the local ecosystem. On this kids fossil adventure, they’re likely to find shark teeth, Megalodon teeth, fossilized vertebrae, ray plates and much more. These finds become treasured keepsakes and can be made into jewelry or sorted by species, continuing the education far beyond the day’s adventure.
Salt Marsh Estuary Scavenger Hunt
On this expedition, we will take a boat ride through Shem Creek, searching for what makes up a salt marsh estuary. Along the way we will do a scavenger hunt looking for periwinkle snails, fiddler crabs, pluff mud, and much more!
Dolphin Citizen Science
Come out and learn about one of our favorite animals, the bottlenose dolphin! On this trip we will take a cruise on Shem Creek and in the harbor looking for dolphins, learning how to identify these animals, and become citizen scientists!
Critter Collection
Meet us out on the dock and catch some salt marsh critters, such as fish, crabs, shrimp, and much more! You will learn how to cast net, dip net, and use a crab pot. Once you catch something we will identify it and put it into the aquarium to observe throughout the trip!
