Island Quest Field Trips

Field Trips
Coastal Expeditions is proud to offer to groups and educators alike our "Island Quest" programs. These quality field study programs are structured to meet S.C. Science Curriculum Standards and offer an unmatched hands on marine and barrier island experience for your group and/or students.

Board the 38-passenger ferry for the 30 minute ride to Bull Island. As we travel through the estuary your naturalist will point out dolphins and shore, wading and migratory birds and explain the dynamics of this super biodiversified ecosystem. We will examine live marine specimens and discuss the numerous creatures that make the estuary the "nursery of the sea." Once on the island, our programming continues, offering several different options.

Minimum number of participants: 20. Maximum 38.

Island Quest Field Trips

Option 1 - Beach Exploration
3 hours. $22/person. 1 group leader at no charge.

The ferry will transport your group directly to one of the longest stretches of undeveloped beach on the Eastern seaboard. Our naturalist led beach walks include activities such as searching for shore creatures and identifying shells, living and vacated; geological beach dynamics; tidal cycles; identifying various botanical specimens; and the adaptations used by the creatures here in this transitional beach ecosystem. Be prepared to learn, have fun and get your hands sandy!

Island Quest Field Trips

Option 2 - Maritime Forest & Freshwater Pond Exploration
3 hours. $22/person. 1 group leader at no charge.

After landing on the Bull Island dock, we will explore the interior maritime forest. Along the island's trails we will pass shell mounds left by Native Americans as we make our way to the freshwater impoundments, home to alligators, otters, turtles and a vast array of birds. We will also examine insects and animal tracks that we find along the way. Your naturalist will explain the historical and ecological importance of the maritime forest and the necessity of freshwater ponds as an oasis for migratory waterfowl.

Island Quest Field Trips

Option 3 - Barrier Island Adventure
6 hours. $32/person. 1 group leader at no charge.

This comprehensive program encompasses highlights of both the Beach and Maritime Forest/Freshwater Pond Explorations. The Barrier Island Adventure option offers a complete, well-rounded study of barrier island ecology and is a great opportunity for your students to gain hands-on experience.

Please call today for an Island Quest Information Packet and to reserve your group's spot on the Bull Island Ferry. All the "Island Quest" Programs can be tailored for different ages and grade levels to fit any specifications and/or requirements for your specific group.
